Radio Control Planes: How to Start This Exciting Hobby

How to Get Started Flying Radio Control Planes

Are you new to RC airplane flying and want suggestions about how and where to start?

You have come to the right place.

If you have never flown or assembled an rc plane before, a good place to start is at the library or book store. Look at several books on the subject that are written for beginners.

However, be sure that the books are fairly recent, as things change quite rapidly in the radio

control airplane industry. Also, notice what the author recommends for beginner airplane

models.

Many experienced with rc airplanes suggest starting with an easily assembled, slow

flying plane. Slow flying remote control planes usually sustain less damage when they crash.

They are also repaired more easily. It is normal to crash frequently in the beginning. But you will

get better with practice.

When you are just starting your rc plane hobby, you must learn how to control the

plane and learn the different parts needed to fly the plane and how each part works. One of the

important things in chosing a plane is to be sure it is on a different radio frequency from that of

others flying in the same location at the same time. Otherwise, the radio frequencies, and thus the

commands you give your plane, will interfer with other planes on the same frequency and cause

problems.

Computer based flight similiator software can help a beginner learn to fly an rc plane.

The brand simulators are somewhat expensive. But there are some shareware programs that can

get you started. However, many only work for a limited amount of time and then you have to

buy. These beginner simulator programs can be found by searching for “shareware radio control

simulator” in your favorite search engine.

Furthermore, there are certain things you need whenever you fly a remote control

plane. In the beginning it is wise to limit spending as much as possible, as the first planes will

probably have crashes and thus damage.

Some of the fundamental things needed to start flying remote control planes.

Of course, you need a plane and that includes a propeller and a motor. Brushless

motors are usually used these days. Then you need a radio that has a transmitter. Also, there is a

flight pack, which includes a receiver, flight controller, and servos. Finally you need a charger

and batteries, usually LiPo batteries. As you gain more experience and decide this is a hobby for

you, you will want to get better quality equipment. However, it is wise to limit expenses when

getting started.
